Amazon Bubbler | Features & Benefits | YSI

Hello, my name is Insley, and I'm a Xylem analytics product manager. In this video, I'll walk you through the features and benefits of the YSI Amazon bubbler and how it can improve your water level monitoring process. The Amazon bubbler provides a continuous flow of air bubbles into the water. It measures the pressure required to maintain this continuous bubble rate to determine the depth of the water.

It has a compact durable aluminum housing designed and rated for extreme temperature operation from negative 40 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius. Once connected to the bubbler using the Wi-Fi adapter or the USB device and host ports, you can use any web browser to change the settings, download data, and manage connections. There is no need to install proprietary software. The optional Amazon Paperwhite display can also be used for configuration and data management.

This low-power anti-sun glare display provides a clear image that can be seen even in bright light. Current stage and pressure data are visible from the home screen for quick reference. The Amazon's low power consumption means it can be deployed in remote locations with a 12-volt battery and solar panel. Two LEDs indicate if the unit is powered on and operational. The bubbler can be used as a standalone system storing data internally or it can be connected to data loggers, PLCs, or RTUs using SDI-12, 4 to 20 milliamps, or Modbus over IP or RS485.

The YSI Amazon bubbler has an industry-leading accuracy of 0.2% full scale and it's available in three different measurement ranges up to 35 meters. All models come with terminal blocks, an outlet fitting, a Wi-Fi adapter, a USB cable, and a two-year warranty. Though not included, a desiccating air dryer with color indicating silica gel feeds is required to prevent moisture from entering the system. The Amazon bubbler can be installed into one of YSI's several turnkey ready-to-go out-of-the-box solutions.

The equipment will arrive fully integrated and tested within a field-ready easy-to-deploy enclosure like this system. The Amazon is mounted inside a NEMA 4X enclosure alongside the required YSI desiccating air dryer, optional data logger and modem, a battery, and a solar panel. Data Buoy for Real-Time Aquaculture | Water Quality and Current Speed

We're here today to launch some water quality monitoring instruments with UTS, and also South Coast Mariculture to help monitor the water quality for their mussel farms.

This came about out of the recent catastrophic weather that we've been having, the bushfires and the storms. Aquaculture along the coast lost a lot of their infrastructure. They lost a lot of their product, they got damaged, and we decided we would join with the industry, with researchers, and also with government departments, and try to do something to help that industry.

And this project is now to work with the mussel farmers to look at water quality in Jervis Bay and Eden and to help them to increase their productivity, to understand the water column better, and maybe to expand their aquaculture into the future.

South Coast Mariculture - we are marine farmers. We're farming the pristine waters of Jervis Bay and Twofold Bay, producing quality seafood for everybody in New South Wales, Queensland, and beyond. When you really delve into it, the impact of our operations do go a long way throughout the community. We've got, I think it's 25 to 30 employees up at the factory processing the seafood from the Jervis Bay shellfish market.

So, for this project, we're installing the YSI buoy with EXO2 multiparameter sonde that's going to be measuring pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and algae. We're also looking at current speed measurements and also weather conditions as well. This will give the key stakeholders important information to make critical decisions with changes in water quality or weather.

There's a real shift in the industry to move towards high-quality data collection, and the live monitoring of the water quality environments for a couple of reasons. It increases efficiency, and it increases sustainability through critical decision-making through live monitoring of weather events or water quality, or changes in flow.

All data is invaluable to us as marine farmers. Things like water temperature, chlorophyll, salinity, they're all measures that can help us improve the growth of our mussels and the volumes that we can grow and we'll know over time some of that data sets will help us improve the times of the year that we seed our mussels, the times of the year that we harvest our mussels, and we don't have to get out on the ocean. We can still monitor what's going on with our farm, and within our farm without having to get out there. Thanks to the water monitoring buoy, and very much looking forward to it.

We hope that our work will assist them to grow greater product, better product for all seafood consumers. I'd really like to thank the mussel farmers, combined with the researchers at UTS, and the Department of Primary Industries, as well as Xylem, and together we really hope that this project will transform Australian shellfish.

YSI EXO-S Series Overview

(Video Transcript) Hi, this is Zack Henderson, Product Manager for YSI, a Xylem brand, and I'm proud to introduce the EXO-S Series Multiparameter Water Quality Sondes. The EXO-S sondes are shorter, lighter, more affordable, and more sustainable versions of our industry-leading EXO sondes.

These sondes are purpose-built without a battery compartment and provide the same sensor payload and best-in-class performance for applications where external power is available.

There are three sonde models with optional depth sensors to choose from. The EXO1s features a removable bail and four sensor ports. Combine these with an EXO handheld for an extremely powerful, discreet sampling solution.

The EXO2s features seven ports including a central wiper port to keep sensors clean during deployments. It also includes an auxiliary port for integrating third-party sensors or daisy-chaining sondes together.

And if you don't need that many ports but still want active anti-fouling, then the EXO3s is just right, with five ports including the central wiper port.

These battery-less sondes offer several advantages to standard EXO-S as long as external power can be provided. The first and most obvious is the smaller footprint, which means the sonde can fit into tight spaces and be more easily hidden. These are also lighter sondes that are better suited for integration with AUVs, drones, and buoys where weight is a factor. Perhaps most compelling is the lower price point. With these sondes it is more affordable than ever to adopt the EXO platform, and you don't have to worry about replacing and disposing of alkaline batteries.

With reduced size, weight, and cost, the EXO-S sondes are a great option for discreet sampling applications. For example, the EXO1s is perfect for spot-checking water quality with a handheld. In addition to popular water quality parameters such as conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity, YSI offers unique sensors including total algae plus chlorophyll, fDOM, Rhodamine, and the NitraLED UV nitrate sensor which is exclusive to the EXO platform.

Using the EPA-approved DPD colorimetric method of analysis, the 3017M provides accurate and reliable chlorine measurements in a variety of municipal and industrial applications to help monitor and control the chlorination process.

Primary drinking water applications for the 3017M include monitoring residual chlorine for process optimization, alarming, and reporting. Primary wastewater applications include disinfection control, monitoring dechlorination, and process optimization.

EXO2s Sonde Unboxing & Overview

Hi, this is Zack Henderson, product manager for YSI, a Xylem brand. And today, I'm super excited to do an unboxing video for our brand new EXO2s Sonde. The first thing you might notice about this is the size difference. Here is your standard EXO2 box size comparison with the EXO2s box. Definitely saves on space and shipping.

When you open up the box, the first thing you'll be greeted with is our quick start guide. It's front and back. You will receive a maintenance kit that includes a syringe for cleaning the depth sensor, and also a couple magnetic sensor installation and removal tools.

In addition, we have our lubricant and a spare bulkhead O-ring. This lubricant is absolutely critical for making sure our wet-mate connectors stay well lubricated. And then we have a bag with a bunch of port plugs. So we have four sensor port plugs, and then plugs for our main connector ports and our auxiliary port. And then finally, don't lose this, this is the USB drive containing the core software, which you'll use to interface with the sonde. Now let's talk about the main attraction here, the sonde. So this is the EXO2s Sonde. Let me get this box out of the way.

So the EXO2s Sonde, what is the EXO2s? It is the short version of our standard EXO2 Sonde. We basically remove the battery compartment. So you get a much more compact package, but you do have to supply external power. Aside from that, all the benefits of a normal EXO2 are here. So I have a standard EXO2 conveniently set to the side here, so we can get a nice visual on the differences. And as you can see, it is about a 40% reduction in length. It's also a much lighter solution. So for applications that are space-sensitive, if you wanna hide the sonde, it's a much smaller footprint. Drone or AUV applications where weight might be a factor, this would be a better choice. And this is also, you know, much lighter on your budget as well. So as long as you can supply external power, this is gonna be a more cost-effective solution than the sonde here. Also, without the internal battery compartment, you don't have to worry about replacing alkaline batteries. So it's a more sustainable solution as well.

So let's talk about the sonde itself. So on the top, we have the bale and the two main connector ports. We have our power and communication port here. So this is what would be connected to your topside monitoring system, which would allow for communication and supplying external power. We also have our auxiliary port, which you can use to daisy-chain sondes together. You can connect our EXO PAR sensor or a third-party sensor to it. But most of the time, I think most users just plug this port here.

And this is an EXO2, so you get seven sensor ports. Most of the time, a central wiper will be placed in the center port here leaving six universal ports to plug in any EXO sensors you want in your payload. And the central wiper will keep those clean over the course of the deployment. Also, you can see these four holes here, that is our integrated depth sensor. So the depth sensor is built into the sonde here. Another cool thing is on the body of the sonde, it actually tells you how far away the depth measurement is being made from the other sensor measurements. So, I have a DO sensor here, for example, I'm gonna plug in.

So when you're measuring water quality with an EXO, most of the measurements take place right around this area. All the sensing is done here. So it's nice that it tells you how far, especially if it's in a vertical orientation, how far away the depth is being measured versus all the other sensor readings. And with core software, you can actually input an offset for the depth sensor if you wanted to kind of match those up if it's deployed in a vertical orientation. So that's kind of cool. One other thing I wanted to highlight, and this is true for all of our EXO Sondes, is that we use real wet-mate connectors. And what that means is if water was on the connector, splashed or even submerged, ideally, you wouldn't wanna do this, but when you plug a sensor in, there's no risk to it shorting out or anything like that.

Some of our competitors that use LEMO-style connectors with an O-ring seal or a double O-ring seal, that's all well and good but if water gets in that port and you plug the sensor in, those pins are gonna corrode. It's not really a factor here. But something that is important about the wet-mate connectors on the sensor side and on the cable side is keeping them well lubricated. I actually notice, you might see the pins glistening here, the wet-mates come pre-lubricated. So that's cool, but you also want to make sure to periodically apply some of that grease there to keep them well lubricated. So one other really cool use for this would be using it with a handheld for spot sampling applications. Go ahead and just plug this in here. All right. So given this relatively compact form factor and the fact that it has seven sensor ports, you get all the sensor options available on EXO, again, in a relatively compact spot sampling package, much more easier to move around and maneuver than the larger EXO2 Sonde. So EXO2s, definitely consider for spot sampling applications.

Hi, this is Zack Henderson, product manager for YSI, a Xylem brand. In this video, I'm going to cover four decisions to make when selecting a ProSwap Logger for your application.

The ProSwap Logger is a powerful and cost-effective water quality and level monitoring instrument. It's fully customizable and perfect for short and long-term deployments. To make sure you have the best system for your application, there are four key decisions to make.

The first decision involves powering the ProSwap Logger. Are you going to supply external power or do you need an internal battery? There are two versions of the ProSwap Logger, one with an internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery and one without. The internal battery version can be deployed autonomously for at least 90 days at a 15-minute logging interval when fully charged. The version without a battery is a little shorter and power can be supplied through a number of accessories, which I'll get to later. The non-battery version is a lower price. However, you may find that having an internal battery is a nice backup even if you can supply external power.

Once you decide on a power option, you will need to pick a cable length and depth option, leading us to our second buying decision, which is how deep do you need to deploy the ProSwap Logger? We offer cable lengths ranging from 1 meter up to 100 meters in length. If you're submerging your ProSwap Logger at a depth of 10 meters or less, then you can choose between a vented and non-vented depth sensor. Vented depth offers the benefit of real-time compensation for changes in barometric pressure. The vented ProSwap Logger includes a desiccant pack and replacement packs are available.

The ProSwap Logger features built-in depth and temperature sensors as well as a single port for installing any ProDSS Digital Smart Sensor. You'll need to decide which sensor is right for your application, and that brings us to our third buying decision. There are 10 different ProDSS sensors available. These include optical dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, pH or a combination pH/ORP sensor, ammonium, chloride, or nitrate ion-selective electrodes, and two total algae sensors for freshwater and seawater. Each Digital Smart Sensor holds its own calibration, making them hot-swappable, but you can only deploy one at a time.

Your choices thus far will dictate some of the accessories you may need. Our fourth and final buying decision involves which accessories are needed for your application. Let's first look at deployment accessories. Every ProSwap Logger comes with a cable connector cap, and this is all you need if you select a ProSwap Logger with an internal battery and set up for autonomous deployments. This cap protects the pins from the elements as the connector is hung topside.

We have two accessories available for supplying external power to the ProSwap Logger. The first is a simple power pack that comes with six AA batteries and will provide months of logging. The second is a flying lead cable adapter which allows you to output to an existing data collection platform and supply external power.

Next, let's look at some accessories for interfacing with the ProSwap Logger. There are two primary options. One is a ProSwap handheld meter. This is a great portable option for checking live data, retrieving log data, and setting up deployments on the go. You can also use a ProDSS handheld.

The second option is a USB adapter. This allows you to interface with the ProSwap Logger using Kor software. Kor is a powerful software tool that makes it easy to calibrate sensors, set up deployments, and manage data.

There are a few more accessories that you may find valuable. An extended guard is available and necessary for using the ProSwap Logger with turbidity and total algae sensors. We also offer copper anti-fouling screens to protect your sensor and data from the impacts of biofouling.

Let's talk about why people monitor for algae.

The amount and type of algae can tell you a lot about the health of that system. But first, let’s cover what we’re referring to as algae. In simple terms, algae are photosynthetic organisms like plants. We can separate out the macroalgae, such as the red, brown, and green algae – sometimes referred to as seaweeds. Let’s instead focus on the microalgae, or single-celled algae.

Prokaryotes like blue-green algae lack a nucleus. This technically makes them photosynthetic bacteria, but they are still important to this discussion. There are also the eukaryotes like those that cause red and brown tides.

One thing all of these microalgae have in common is that you can find them in both freshwater and marine environments.

One major reason to monitor for algae is aquatic ecology research. This includes primary productivity like photosynthesis, system health and dynamics, and an interest in the types and abundance of algae in a system.

But the big reason for monitoring algae these days is source water protection and concerns over drinking water safety. Most states in the U.S. are dealing with Harmful Algal Blooms. These can range from cyanobacteria in the Great Lakes to red tides in Florida and the Gulf Coast. These blooms cause severe impacts on residents and local wildlife. From coast to coast, there is a need for algae monitoring.

So why do we monitor for algae? Scientists might be interested in how a body of water switches over from what we sometimes call healthy algae, like diatoms, to unhealthy algae like the blue-greens. A treatment plant operator or drinking water manager would be more concerned if the product they’re delivering is clean and safe for consumption. And of course, the public beachgoers want to know if it’s safe to swim or fish in the water.

Why do we monitor for dissolved oxygen in water?

Let’s talk about why people monitor for dissolved oxygen.

Most aquatic organisms require dissolved oxygen in order to survive, but what exactly is it? Dissolved oxygen, or DO, is just like the oxygen humans use to breathe, but has been dissolved in water. Unlike the bonded molecules of H20, DO refers to the free oxygen that is present in water or other liquids.

Oxygen can enter the water in several ways, such as from the atmosphere, aeration, or photosynthesis. Once dissolved in water, oxygen is available for use by living organisms and can play a large role in many chemical processes in the environment.

In general, a body of water will trend toward 100% air saturation – achieving equilibrium with the atmosphere. This is key to a healthy system, however different events can greatly affect levels of dissolved oxygen.

Supersaturation happens when DO increases above 100%. This type of imbalance is common during peak growth phases of algal blooms where more oxygen is being generated than can be consumed. Turbulent conditions can also lead to supersaturation if more air gets mixed into the water.

Hypoxia occurs when DO decreases to a level that can no longer support aquatic life. As algal blooms fade and die, more oxygen can be consumed and DO levels will drop. Rapid increases in temperature, such as thermal pollution, can also cause hypoxia. As temperature increases, the level of DO in water decreases. Salty runoff can also result in a fish kill DO levels will decrease as salinity increases.

So why do we monitor for dissolved oxygen? A scientist interested in surface water would view it as a direct indicator of a water body’s ability to support aquatic life. A scientist studying ground water could use DO to help determine when stable conditions are met during purging or to regulate the analysis of metals or volatile compounds. A treatment plant operator would be concerned with DO levels for the microbes used to transform wastewater into harmless end products. And of course the public will be concerned about the health of fish and other aquatic species swimming in their local waters.
