Flow Probe | Features & Benefits | Global Water

Hello. I'm Insley, a product manager for Xylem Analytics. In this video, I will be reviewing the features of the Global Water Flow Probe. The Flow Probe is a rugged and easy-to-use instrument for measuring the average water velocity in streams, rivers, and open channels. It includes a propeller sensor, an aluminum telescoping handle with a staff gauge, a display unit, and a lithium battery that lasts up to five years. The Flow Probe display unit is self-contained and sealed, designed for use in harsh outdoor environments. It is shock-resistant and will float if dropped during use.

The propeller is protected inside a 2-inch diameter housing. This design keeps debris from clogging the propeller, helping avoid interruptions in your sampling day. If the propeller needs to be cleaned, it can be easily removed, cleaned, and replaced onto the Flow Probe. The Flow Probe's display shows the instantaneous and average velocities detected by the propeller in feet or meters per second. The display can also show the minimum or maximum velocity and a timer indicating how long measurements are taken.

You can store up to 30 sets of data points on the Flow Probe for review later. It is important to remember that stream flow velocity can vary throughout the flow's cross-section because of friction between the water and the substrate, surges in velocity, turbulence, and large obstructions. To account for this, the Flow Probe can be moved slowly and smoothly through the water during average velocity measurements. For larger streams and rivers, the cross-sectional area can be divided into subsections, about 1 to 3 feet wide, and a vertical flow profile can be obtained.

The telescoping handle makes monitoring from a boat, bridge, or deeper water easy. The Flow Probe can be deployed in as shallow as 2 inches of water and has an accuracy of 0.1 feet per second in water with a velocity between 0.3 and 20 feet per second. With a floating, watertight display unit, a simple, rugged design, and ease of use, the Global Water Flow Probe is ideal for water velocity field studies.
YSI ProQuatro vs ProDSS | Key Differences to Consider

These multiparameter instruments provide high-quality
data in a variety of applications from rivers and streams to groundwater,
aquaculture, and anywhere else your monitoring takes you. Smart features,
including a built-in USB port and an intuitive user interface, make data
collection easy and convenient.

As with all YSI Pro series instruments, the
ProQuatro and ProDSS are built with field use in mind. They are rugged,
waterproof, and even float if they're dropped in the water.

Both handhelds use
field-replaceable sensors and cables to keep your instrument up and running and
include an industry-leading three-year warranty (on the handheld).

These portable instruments
have low power consumption to maximize your time in the field, and the
rechargeable battery of the ProDSS eliminates battery waste and lowers the cost
of ownership.

The major differences between these handhelds involve 1) cable selection, 2) sensor technology, and 3) the available parameters.

The ProQuatro
and ProDSS are highly customizable, with multiparameter four-port cables and a
variety of lengths. The universal sensor ports of the ProDSS cable accept any
combination of digital smart sensors, giving you full control of your
measurement options.

An additional benefit for ProDSS is that the four-port
cable is available in lengths of up to 100 meters, while the ProQuatro is
limited to 30 meters.

The ProQuatro uses tried and true sensor technology to
provide fast and reliable measurements for 13 major parameters, including
dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, ORP, and temperature.

The ProDSS can
measure all of these parameters and more including turbidity, total algae,
depth, and GPS. Additional optical sensors provide greater stability and data
accuracy in the field. Choose from 21 parameter options to create your perfect
system.

Digital smart sensors are automatically recognized by
the ProDSS for fast, easy setup, and also store their own calibration data.
ProDSS sensors are built with durable titanium to last longer even in harsh
field conditions.

Both instruments feature a large internal memory and an
on-the-go USB port for transferring data to a flash drive. ProDSS offers 20
times more internal memory than ProQuatro and allows direct connection to a PC
using YSI's Kor software. This makes it easy to view recorded data, calibrate
sensors and ensure equipment is operating at peak performance.

These handhelds
are easy to operate with a menu-driven interface and convenient keypad to
quickly navigate the most common features. Readings can be easily viewed on the
large backlit display screen even while wearing polarized glasses.

ProDSS takes
this even further with a full-color display and on-screen graphing capabilities
for viewing sensor stabilization or logged data.

While both instruments are
powerful, the ProDSS offers superior functionality and additional measurement
capabilities that distinguish it as the ultimate sampling handheld.

No matter
which instrument you choose, the YSI professional series sets the standard for
water quality sampling.

ALGAE

Let's talk
about why people monitor for algae.

The amount
and type of algae can tell you a lot about the health of that system. But first,
let’s cover what we’re referring to as algae. In simple terms, algae are photosynthetic
organisms like plants. We can separate out the macroalgae, such as the red,
brown, and green algae – sometimes referred to as seaweeds. Let’s instead focus
on the microalgae, or single-celled algae.

Prokaryotes
like blue-green algae lack a nucleus. This technically makes them
photosynthetic bacteria, but they are still important to this discussion. There
are also the eukaryotes like those that cause red and brown tides.

One thing
all of these microalgae have in common is that you can find them in both
freshwater and marine environments.

One major
reason to monitor for algae is aquatic ecology research. This includes primary
productivity like photosynthesis, system health and dynamics, and an interest
in the types and abundance of algae in a system.

But the big
reason for monitoring algae these days is source water protection and concerns
over drinking water safety. Most states in the U.S. are dealing with Harmful
Algal Blooms. These can range from cyanobacteria in the Great Lakes to red
tides in Florida and the Gulf Coast. These blooms cause severe impacts on
residents and local wildlife. From coast to coast, there is a need for algae
monitoring.

So why do we
monitor for algae? Scientists might be interested in how a body of water
switches over from what we sometimes call healthy algae, like diatoms, to
unhealthy algae like the blue-greens. A treatment plant operator or drinking
water manager would be more concerned if the product they’re delivering is
clean and safe for consumption. And of course, the public beachgoers want to
know if it’s safe to swim or fish in the water.

You can learn more at YSI.com/how-sensors-work

DISSOLVED OXYGEN

Why do we monitor for dissolved oxygen in water?

Let’s talk
about why people monitor for dissolved oxygen.

Most aquatic
organisms require dissolved oxygen in order to survive, but what exactly is it?
Dissolved oxygen, or DO, is just like the oxygen humans use to breathe, but has
been dissolved in water. Unlike the bonded molecules of H20, DO refers to the
free oxygen that is present in water or other liquids.

Oxygen can
enter the water in several ways, such as from the atmosphere, aeration, or
photosynthesis. Once dissolved in water, oxygen is available for use by living
organisms and can play a large role in many chemical processes in the
environment.

In general,
a body of water will trend toward 100% air saturation – achieving equilibrium
with the atmosphere. This is key to a healthy system, however different events
can greatly affect levels of dissolved oxygen.

Supersaturation
happens when DO increases above 100%. This type of imbalance is common during peak growth phases of algal blooms where more oxygen is being generated than can be consumed. Turbulent conditions can also lead to supersaturation if more air gets mixed into the water.

Hypoxia
occurs when DO decreases to a level that can no longer support aquatic life. As
algal blooms fade and die, more oxygen can be consumed and DO levels will drop.
Rapid increases in temperature, such as thermal pollution, can also cause
hypoxia. As temperature increases, the level of DO in water decreases. Salty
runoff can also result in a fish kill DO levels will decrease as salinity
increases.

So why do we
monitor for dissolved oxygen? A scientist interested in surface water would
view it as a direct indicator of a water body’s ability to support aquatic
life. A scientist studying ground water could use DO to help determine when
stable conditions are met during purging or to regulate the analysis of metals
or volatile compounds. A treatment plant operator would be concerned with DO
levels for the microbes used to transform wastewater into harmless end
products. And of course the public will be concerned about the health of fish
and other aquatic species swimming in their local waters.

Thornton Creek Restoration | Urban Watershed

A wilderness teems just
out of sight in rivers, actually below the rivers in the saturated soils,
gravel, sand and rocks under and along the river’s main channel. This is the hyporheic
zone: an entire zone where functions vital to the overall health of a stream
and watershed take place.

And it’s from there in
the healthy Cedar River that Seattle’s Thornton Creek gets a new life.

Waters above and below
ground constantly interact; flowing into and out of one another, circulating
oxygen, removing wastes and moderating temperatures in the main channel,
cooling the water in summer and warming it in the winter.

Plenty of small creatures
live there, too, many invisible to the naked eye, but performing critical
tasks. Invertebrates shred leaf litter, cycling nutrients from the land to the
water. Microbes on the surface of the rocks and gravel provide water treatment,
consuming the nutrients in fertilizer runoff, and even breaking down
hydrocarbons from oil pollution, making the hyporheic a liver of sorts for the
river.

The land, surface waters
and in-stream and subsurface flows all are connected. So as Seattle Public
Utilities (SPU) works to restore Thornton Creek, the city’s largest urban
stream, a new idea has been implemented: Why not start at the bottom, and —
with a little help from the healthy Cedar River — reassemble and reconnect all
the pieces of the watershed to see what happens?

The Thornton
Creek watershed covers roughly 11.6 square miles in northeast Seattle and
Shoreline. Over 90% of the creek’s main channel, more than 15 miles, flows
above ground through more than 700 backyards and through 15 parks and natural
areas.

It is both Seattle’s and
Shoreline’s largest watershed, and drains into Lake Washington at Matthews
Beach Park. That water ultimately goes through the Lake Washington Ship Canal
to Puget Sound. The creek is a historic home to at least five species of
Pacific salmon and trout.

After decades of
development, Thornton Creek had no healthy base to start from. Because of
dredging and channelizing, the creek in some cases altogether lacked the
gravels and other benthic layers beneath and along the channel.

So the city launched an
$11 million experimental restoration in two reaches of Thornton Creek,
rebuilding a total of 1,600 feet of the channel from the ground up. The idea
was to see if a constructed hyporheic zone can provide localized water-quality
treatment in an urban stream.

See how the YSI Pro2030 dissolved oxygen and conductivity/salinity meter played a major role as well in understanding hyporheic zone health.

The YSI ProDSS (digital sampling system) handheld multiparameter meter provides extreme flexibility for the measurement of dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, ORP, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), resistivity, seawater density, total suspended solids (TSS), depth, GPS coordinates, ammonium (ammonia), chloride, nitrate, temperature, and barometric pressure. Some comments customers have sent to us: 'I really think you're hitting a home run with this instrument'.
'I have to say that I am increasingly impressed with every feature of the unit.'
