When treating drinking water, disinfectants like chlorine are vital in ensuring our tap water remains safe for public use. While critical, these disinfectants can react with naturally occurring organic compounds in the water, forming potential health hazards that cause disinfection byproducts.

To help minimize any health impact of DPPs, most notably trihalomethanes, agencies like the World Health Organization, the EPA, and the DWI have set detection limits for THMs in water.

Traditional analysis for these compounds involves gas chromatography and/or mass spectrometry. Due to the size and complexity of a GC system, analysis is often done at an off-site location. This can cost a significant amount of money and cause delays in reporting, which can affect the treatment processes used to counteract THMs. You told us that you wanted a dedicated THM analyzer to deliver results immediately, and we listened.

We are thrilled to present our groundbreaking solution for analyzing THMs in water, the YSI THM 1000. This innovative system simplifies the process, offering walk-up analysis to give you results when and where you need them. Get feedback in 30 minutes, allowing for on-site analysis and on-site optimization.

How does this all work? The YSI THM 1000 first collects a water sample, which is then introduced into the sparging system. This system passes a carrier gas through the sample water, facilitating the introduction of THMs to the analyzer. The dedicated purge and trap system automatically separates the THM from the water sample. The sparged THMs are concentrated on a sorbent trap. Once the sparging is completed, the THMs are desorbed and sent to the chromatographic column for separation and subsequent detection.

The THM 1000 utilizes a SAW detector, an acronym for surface acoustic wave phenomena, first published in 1885. With over a century of refinement, this particular SAW detector was developed in conjunction with Sandia National Laboratories. It can measure VOC analytes with a sensitivity of one part per billion.

Dedicated to ensuring safe public drinking water, the YSI THM 1000 is designed for simple operation. In conclusion, the YSI THM 1000 simplifies THM analysis, offering rapid and accurate results and eliminating the need for timely and costly analysis.

Three Water Quality Chemistry Methods For Harmful Algal Blooms

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are one of the greatest threats to water quality globally. Today’s reservoir managers and watershed managers are often equipped to identify blue-green algae by microscopy, test for cyanotoxins like microcystin and cylindrospermopsin, and monitor surface water quality using tools like water quality sondes.

But some analyses require the personnel and infrastructure found in environmental testing labs, which are increasingly called upon to provide testing support.

In this recording, we describe how to prepare your environmental testing laboratory for the three most relevant water quality analyses to understand the drivers and impacts of HABs.

- Total phosphorus by USEPA Method 365.1
- Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) by USEPA Method 351.2
- Geosmin and MIB Determination, guided by USEPA Method 524.3 for volatile organics

YSI Titrator Inspection and Maintenance

Here are our recommendations on inspection and maintenance guidelines to ensure that you get the most out of your YSI titrators.

Before we begin today, I want to emphasize that maintenance checks vary among laboratories. The frequency of use, throughput capacity, and sample type can alter maintenance schedules for each instrument. It is important to be mindful of this as you use your titration system. Let's begin.

The first and easiest step to improve your product's lifespan is to begin with a simple cleaning. Spills happen all the time in the lab. Be sure to wipe away any liquids or spills from your titrator with a laboratory soft towel or a Kimwipe whenever necessary. Having a clean instrument will ensure peak condition and optimal workflow. After the exterior surface of the titrator is clean, we will perform an overall instrument inspection. For heavy strain labs, we recommend inspecting your equipment on a weekly basis. For lower strain laboratories, a monthly inspection should be enough.

To begin, check for leakage around the dosing system. Confirm the piston is tight. If the piston is not tight, or you're having trouble tightening it, you may want to replace the piston. Check out YSI.com to browse our piston size options. Confirm the valve is also tight. The titration tubes should be attached and there should be no moisture under the valve. If there is moisture or the valve will not tighten, you may need a new one. Check out YSI.com to browse our options.

The last step in completing an inspection is to confirm that the titration tip is free of blockages. A blocked titration tip could prevent liquid from dispersing, leading to inaccurate titrations. We would recommend thoroughly cleaning your dosing system every three months. It's important that all of the parts are cleaned separately. A thorough cleaning depends on what titrant you're using in your laboratory. For the purpose of this video, we are going to clean the dosing system with distilled water.

Our team at YSI also recommends performing a complete technical and visual inspection every six months or twice a year. This inspection is designed to ensure that there are no dings or external damage. Air bubbles lead to inaccurate dosing measurements. It's important to confirm that there are no air bubbles in your dosing components. If you see air bubbles, continuously run the titrant through the system. Check for any exterior damage to the titrator. Look over the instrument and ensure that there is no obvious damage that could affect your titration. Take a closer look and inspect the electrical components to check for rust and other physical damage. And to round out your routine maintenance and inspection, our team at YSI recommends certifying your unit for volumetric performance according to ISO 8655. This helps ensure that the data you produce is accurate and reliable.

Titration is one of oldest quantitative chemical analysis. Previously, it's been done by hand with a glass burette and a color indicator, which unfortunately is subjective from person to person. With improvements in automation and instrumentation, we are able to remove that human subjectivity.

Our premium titration equipment is handcrafted with unmatched precision, offering advanced features within a budgetary scope of any lab.

We have a total of eight different models of titrators offering a wide range for features and capabilities, from our manual piston burettes all the way up to our manual titration systems. You can even daisy-chain these units together to create your own unique titration system with Titrisoft.

Titrisoft is our titration software that provides valuable features like data collection, automated calculations, reporting and more. The intuitive user interface enable technicians to begin running titration with minimal upfront training.

We have two types of units, one with the interchangeable burettes and ones without. The interchangeable burette is easily taken off and exchanged with a different unit. This allows for increased safety because you're not interacting with a corrosive titrants. It also has an RFID chip in it, which enables you to store information like titrant name or concentration and more.

At the top of the line, we have our Titroline 7800. This instrument combines the features of all of our other titrators into one titration instrument. This enables you to do all potentiometric titrations, all the way up to the volumetric Karl Fischer titration. It also has capabilities with our auto samplers to be able to completely automate your titration process.

Along with our family of titrators, we offer a wide variety of auto samplers and over 300-plus electrodes to be able to build your unique titration configuration.

There are three main components of the system, the first one being the TitroLine 7000 base unit. This is essentially the brain of the system, and all of the accessories will come along with it. The second part is the exchangeable burette which is the slide-on/slide-off modular burette option that we offer, and all the tubing comes along with that.
