We're here today to launch some water quality monitoring instruments with UTS, and also South Coast Mariculture to help monitor the water quality for their mussel farms.

This came about out of the recent catastrophic weather that we've been having, the bushfires and the storms. Aquaculture along the coast lost a lot of their infrastructure. They lost a lot of their product, they got damaged, and we decided we would join with the industry, with researchers, and also with government departments, and try to do something to help that industry.

And this project is now to work with the mussel farmers to look at water quality in Jervis Bay and Eden and to help them to increase their productivity, to understand the water column better, and maybe to expand their aquaculture into the future.

South Coast Mariculture - we are marine farmers. We're farming the pristine waters of Jervis Bay and Twofold Bay, producing quality seafood for everybody in New South Wales, Queensland, and beyond. When you really delve into it, the impact of our operations do go a long way throughout the community. We've got, I think it's 25 to 30 employees up at the factory processing the seafood from the Jervis Bay shellfish market.

So, for this project, we're installing the YSI buoy with EXO2 multiparameter sonde that's going to be measuring pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and algae. We're also looking at current speed measurements and also weather conditions as well. This will give the key stakeholders important information to make critical decisions with changes in water quality or weather.

There's a real shift in the industry to move towards high-quality data collection, and the live monitoring of the water quality environments for a couple of reasons. It increases efficiency, and it increases sustainability through critical decision-making through live monitoring of weather events or water quality, or changes in flow.

All data is invaluable to us as marine farmers. Things like water temperature, chlorophyll, salinity, they're all measures that can help us improve the growth of our mussels and the volumes that we can grow and we'll know over time some of that data sets will help us improve the times of the year that we seed our mussels, the times of the year that we harvest our mussels, and we don't have to get out on the ocean. We can still monitor what's going on with our farm, and within our farm without having to get out there. Thanks to the water monitoring buoy, and very much looking forward to it.

We hope that our work will assist them to grow greater product, better product for all seafood consumers. I'd really like to thank the mussel farmers, combined with the researchers at UTS, and the Department of Primary Industries, as well as Xylem, and together we really hope that this project will transform Australian shellfish.

Our three vehicle offerings are the rQPOD and HYCAT, autonomous surface vehicles or ASVs, and the i3XO EcoMapper, an autonomous underwater vehicle or AUV.

The rQPOD is the latest addition to our vehicle fleet. It is light enough to be easily deployable in remote locations with one person. The rQPOD allows flexible sensor integration from the full line of YSI EXO sondes for surface water quality mapping to the SonTek M9 and RS5 for bathymetry and discharge measurements.

With the new autonomous feature, a pre-planned mission can be created to allow complete mapping of the body of water where it is used. The rQPOD is the perfect vehicle for smaller lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and hard-to-reach areas where operating and navigating a larger vehicle isn't possible.

The HYCAT is our larger AUV. This allows you to collect water quality, current profiling, bathymetry, discharge, and side scan, all simultaneously and in real-time.

The HYCAT is perfect for use in near coastal environments because of the catamaran design that allows it to cut smoothly through the water, providing the most stable data possible.

The i3XO EcoMapper is our AUV, which allows you to dive to depths of 100 meters with various sensor payloads.

With the EXO1 integrated into the nose of the EcoMapper, the user can collect water quality at depth using any of the available EXO sensors from YSI.

With the possible addition of swath bathymetry, dual frequency side scan, and photogrammetry modules, the i3XO EcoMapper can collect all data simultaneously to reduce overall mission time with co-located data.

By diving under the water, the EcoMapper allows the user to get a complete water quality profile from surface to bottom while avoiding all the risks associated with running on the surface.

But, did you know that our services can include helping you in the field?

We help customers every day with the maintenance of their continuous monitoring stations. Water quality monitoring stations need to be visited on a routine basis for equipment and site maintenance.

It's important to remember that maintenance is not just about the equipment. The general condition of a site should also be inspected before turning your attention to the equipment.

Our team will check for safe access, changes in water level or flow patterns, debris or trash, signs of vandalism, and the condition of the above-ground equipment. A skilled field technician will clean the equipment. This includes the sonde body, sensors, sensor faces, cables, solar panels, and any other equipment as needed.

They will also perform cal checks, calibrate on-site, or hot swap with recalibrated replacement sensors and replace modules and caps as necessary. And, they'll retrieve your data. It can be downloaded manually or via telemetry to HydroSphere.

Routine maintenance on your water monitoring equipment ensures that everything is functioning properly for you to continue to receive the most accurate data.

As part of an extensive California State University, Long Beach Shark Lab study, the YSI EcoMapper AUV was used to understand the relationship between temperature and shark behaviors. In this particular instance, the shark was curious, and perhaps a bit hungry, as he grabs the EcoMapper.

Harmful Algal Blooms are so prevalent in Clear Lake, California, that it is one of the most heavily monitored lakes in North America. Temperature and eutrophication are certainly drivers of HABs, but Clear Lake's high structural heterogeneity makes it hard to pinpoint the role of water quality and other environmental factors in favoring the dominant algal species and the size and duration of a bloom. In this case study, we demonstrate the utility of high-resolution, temporally- and spatially-integrated data sets collected with an autonomous underwater vehicle, YSI's i3XO EcoMapper and more traditional methods, for better understanding these factors.
