Water Scarcity | Who's Minding the Planet? | YSI
It was the end of an exceptionally dry year.
In fact, it was the end of an exceptionally dry decade.
A decade that saw increasing global and ocean temperatures. A decade that dealt with more frequent and devastating wildfires. And, a decade that continued to see women, in Africa alone, spend 40 billion hours each year walking in search of water.
Water scarcity is an issue that affects a majority of the population. Currently, 85% of the world’s population lives in the driest half of the planet and, according to UN Water, water use has been growing globally at more than twice the rate of population increase.
In fact, in the decade to come - an estimated 1.8 billion people will live in areas plagued by water scarcity with up to 2/3rds of the population under water stress conditions.
This could result in the displacement of up to 700 million people.
The planet needs water heroes.
